FALL 2024 HOT TOPIC
Should We Worry? Christian Nationalism in Our Schools
The event on October 21, which focused on Christian nationalism and was held in collaboration with Temple Shalom, sparked a thoughtful conversation about the concerning state of religious freedom in Texas’ public schools and beyond. Rabbi Shira Wallach masterfully steered the discussion with our distinguished guests: Amanda Tyler – Executive Director of BJC (Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty), David R. Brockman, Ph.D., Nonresident Scholar at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, and Dr. Charles Luke, Founder and Director of the Coalition for Education Funding (a group of over 85 public school districts), the Co-Founder of the Southeast Texas Education Coalition, the Co-director of Pastors for Texas Children.
The panelists emphasized that the recently proposed K-5th grade Texas curriculum heavily focuses on Christianity, neglecting other major religions. It presents a skewed view of Christianity, completely disregarding challenging historical facts.
The lessons often imply that Christian beliefs are intrinsically accurate, raising concerns about favoritism towards a specific brand of fundamentalist Christianity and detailed Bible content is included even when not necessary. Moreover, while the curriculum claims to spotlight religious freedom, it misrepresents its role in the founding of America and downplays other important liberties.
The public comment period on the Texas Board portal and the testimonies in the Texas Legislature suggest that the proposed curriculum is a highly unpopular policy, one that undervalues the diversity of backgrounds and thought in our state.
Thank you for joining this vital discussion. Now it’s time to spread awareness and take action!
📢TAKE ACTION NOW: Stop Bible Infused Curriculum in Texas Public Schools
The new curriculum designed to include Biblical references and readings for students from kindergarten to fifth grade could begin in August 2025. Schools could get $60 per student for adopting these lessons, with a conclusive vote set for November.
The Texas Board of Education is set to cast their final votes on the latest version of the curriculum during the week of November 18-23.
NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT!
⚠️ URGE SBOE Member District 12 TO VOTE NO on the Bible-infused curriculum!
